What is THCP Flower?
THCP flower is hemp flower with added THCP. This product is essentially the same thing you’d buy from a local dispensary or dealer: a smokable flower that produces the same psychoactive effects of cannabis when lit and inhaled. THCP, however, is not just any cannabinoid. It is so potent that its psychoactive level has become the stuff of dreams! But what exactly is THCP? And why has it gained such a reputation?
As of now, THCP, or tetrahydrocannabiphorol, is the strongest, most powerful cannabinoid discovered in cannabis plants. It’s an analog of THC which is believed to have about 33 times the potency of regular delta 9. To put things in perspective, delta 9 is twice as powerful as Delta 8 and around 30% more powerful than HHC.
A group of Italian researchers discovered the compound accidentally in 2019. They weren’t searching for new cannabinoids, but simply wanted to examine cannabis samples from a closer angle. According to their findings, THCP interacts primarily with CB1 receptors in the endocannabinoid system, just like THC. However, unlike THC, THCP has a much stronger affinity for CB1 receptors. It’s thought to be around 33 times more effective at binding to them, making it much more powerful than THC.
It has a longer alkyl side chain than THC on a scientific level. THCP’s longer alkyl side chain binds to receptors in the endocannabinoid system more effectively, which is why it’s so strong on a molecular level. In other words, THCP has a longer side chain, so it produces a bigger buzz.
Even though research on the compound is still relatively in its infancy because it was just recently discovered, we do know a thing or two about THCP. We know it gets you astronomically high, but THCP has some other benefits as well. The same team of researchers who initially discovered THCP also learned that THCP can be beneficial to the human body in many ways.
According to their research, THCP may have the following benefits:
- Stretching short, tight ligaments (hypomobility)
- Mild to severe pain relief
- Help with sleep, especially for those in pain
- May lower body temperature, especially in the rectum
Is THCP Flower Legal?
THCP flower is legal at the federal level under the Farm Bill of 2018. Known as the Agriculture Improvement Act, this bill was signed into law by Donald Trump. Legal distinctions have been established between marijuana and hemp as a result of the Farm Bill, where marijuana is defined as cannabis plants containing more than 0.3% THC and hemp is defined as cannabis plants containing 0.3% THC or less on a dry-weight basis. Although the Agriculture Improvement Act legalized hemp and hemp derivatives, it did not legalize marijuana, which is still considered an illegal schedule I substance. For your THCP product to be considered federally legal, it must be extracted from hemp and contain 0.3% THC or less.
Many states have passed laws prohibiting or heavily restraining hemp products, including THCP, despite the government’s assessment and acceptance of hemp and hemp compounds. While the compound hasn’t been specifically mentioned in state legislation, it may not be legal in the following states:
